One dead House Finch retrieved by the Shasta Mosquito and Vector Control was tested at U.C. Davis and confirmed to be positive for West Nile Virus (WNV). The House Finch was found on July 15, 2010 in Redding.

John, the District Vector Ecologist took some time out of his schedule to read to the "Summer Storytime" program at the Cottonwood Library. Not only did John read, he brought some of the District's fun insects for show and tell.
With the warmer days and rising mosquito trap numbers SMVCD is anticipating, weather permitting, adult mosquito operations this week.

The District trap counts are slowly rising with the warmer weather in Anderson. In an effort to reduce those numbers, we will be performing adult mosquito control operations on 6/23/2010. Click here for fogging areas
For the second year, Shasta Mosquito and Vector Control has obtained an area warrant for the inspection and abatement of mosquito breeding in neglected swimming pools. Also, for the third year the District will be conducting our annual neglected pool aerial surveillance aimed at locating potential mosquito breeding pools. These two tools in conjunction with reporting from our District residents, give District staff the ability to find and treat mosquito sources quickly and efficiently. For more information:

The Anderson Valley Post stopped by for our Open House during Mosquito awareness week and wrote up an article about their experience!
The District is currently planning on performing adult mosquito control in areas where our adult mosquito surveillance dictates on Thurs May 13th and Friday May 14th. Check back to the website the day before, as the areas to be treated will be posted.
The planned fogging routes for Friday morning were cancelled due to weather. No fogging is currently planned for Monday 5/10/2010
